Taking a page from Peninsula School District’s approach (Klein, 2024), you can use AI to help create your own policy. Their executive director for digital learning, Kris Hagel, described using ChatGPT to draft their district-wide policy:
- Gather relevant resources: Collect existing AI guidance documents from trusted sources
- Highlight key points: Note the most important principles and guidelines
- Use AI as a drafting tool: Input those highlights into an AI tool like ChatGPT with a prompt such as: “Based on these points, draft a classroom AI policy document for a [your grade level] [your subject] class”
- Personalize the tone: Consider providing samples of your writing so the AI can match your voice
- Review and revise: Share the draft with colleagues for feedback
You can structure your AI prompting using the STEP framework (explained in detail in my previous blog post) to get the best results:

“In this class, ‘AI tools’ refers to any technology that can generate content or solve problems without explicit programming, including but not limited to large language models (like ChatGPT), image generators, code assistants, and automated writing tools.”
2. The Traffic Light System: A Practical Framework
Stanford’s Center for Teaching and Learning (2024) recommends a color-coded system that clearly communicates what uses are appropriate. This “traffic light” approach makes policies easy for students to understand and remember:
Red Light (Not Permitted)
- Submitting AI-generated work as your own without disclosure
- Using AI to complete assignments meant to assess individual skills
- Sharing account credentials or using AI to impersonate others
Yellow Light (Requires Disclosure)

Simple Citation Approach: For many classroom settings, a straightforward attribution statement may be sufficient. As recommended by Purdue University Library (2023):
“[Text/Visuals] were created with assistance from [name the specific AI tool]. I affirm that the ideas within this assignment are my own and that I am wholly responsible for the content, style, and voice of the following material.”
For more formal work, you may want to require citations according to your discipline’s standard format (APA, MLA, or Chicago). Provide examples relevant to your class and subject area.
Emphasize to students that simply listing AI tools at the end of their work isn’t sufficient. They need to explain how the AI contributed to their thinking or process, and they remain responsible for the accuracy and quality of their work even when using AI assistance.
5. Explain Your Rationale and Consequences
Include a clear explanation of why your policy exists. This helps students understand that the policy isn’t arbitrary but is designed to support their learning. For example:
“College is about discovering your own voice and style in writing, creating the version of yourself you want to be in the future. To do that, you need to trust in your own ideas and develop the skills you have to become that person you want to be” (Bluestone, 2024).
Also establish clear consequences for misuse. Consider a tiered approach to consequences:
“First offense: The student will receive a warning and be required to redo the assignment. Second offense: The student will receive a failing grade for the assignment and may be referred to the academic integrity committee. Third offense: The student may receive a failing grade for the course and face disciplinary action.”
